Chimneys — The Warriors
The rooftop chimneys of Casa Milà, popularly known as La Pedrera, are far from simple functional elements. Gaudí transformed them into sculptural, anthropomorphic forms reminiscent of warriors or helmeted guardians, silent figures watching over Barcelona from the heights of Passeig de Gràcia. The twenty-nine chimneys, some standing alone and others grouped together, form an imposing and mysterious ensemble that turns an architectural necessity into an essential part of the building's sculptural landscape — showing how, in Gaudí's work, functionality and artistic expression can coexist in perfect harmony.
Ventilation Towers — The Cross
The ventilation towers on the rooftop of Casa Milà are likewise far from mere technical structures. Gaudí conceived them as sculptural pieces of great visual power, with sinuous, helical forms that coil around themselves and culminate in a cross-shaped crown. The two towers served to renew the air in the attic, but their presence transcends this use entirely: clad in trencadís and set among chimneys and dormers, they form part of a unique architectural universe where the functional is transformed into beauty, symbol and fantasy.
